When You Don’t Understand

Jesus made it simple.

He authored no novels, leadership, psychology, or religious texts.

Amazingly, the Ultimate Truth created no dogma, creed, or liturgy.

The All Knowing made it simple.  Put it on the lower shelf.  Placed it in the shallow end.  Even guys like me with a small UQ (Understanding Quotient) can get it.

“Thy kingdom come, thy will be done.” Jesus taught.

I’m to surrender my will to His, when I understand and when I don’t.

My life finds all of its meaning when I raise the white flag of surrender to God.

Surrendering my wish to understand is sometimes the most challenging surrender of them all. Desiring to “understand” is often a code word for “God, you didn’t follow my advice or demands.”

Crazy, isn’t it? To think that I could counsel the Counselor.

Years ago I had the delight of talking with the prolific song writer, Ira Stanphill. Ira said, “One day my life suddenly made no sense at all. Out of the blue I received a manila envelope. When I opened it I was shocked beyond belief. My wife had filed for divorce. I was in total shock. The breath was knocked out of me. I couldn’t believe it. A couple of days later, as I was leaving an attorney’s office, I was weeping with deep grief. I had no strength to walk another step. Leaning against a street light pole to keep me from falling over, I had a thought that I wrote down on the back of that same manila folder.”

Tho’ shadows deepen, and my heart bleeds,
I will not question the way He leads;
This side of Heaven we know in part,
I will not question a broken heart.

We’ll talk it over in the bye and bye.
We’ll talk it over, my Lord and I.
I’ll ask the reasons – He’ll tell me why,
When we talk it over in the bye and bye.

I’ll trust His leading, He’ll never fail,
Thru darkest tunnels or misty vales.
Obey his bidding and faithful be,
Tho’ only one step ahead I see.

We’ll talk it over in the bye and bye.
We’ll talk it over, my Lord and I.
I’ll ask the reasons – He’ll tell me why,
When we talk it over in the bye and bye.

I’ll hide my heartache behind a smile
And wait for reasons ’til after while.
And tho’ He try me, I know I’ll find
That all my burdens are silver lined.

We’ll talk it over in the bye and bye.
We’ll talk it over, my Lord and I.
I’ll ask the reasons – He’ll tell me why,
When we talk it over in the bye and bye.

When things aren’t making sense for you, join Jesus in Gethsemane and pray,

“Nevertheless, not my will but thine be done.”

2016/2017 MCA Church Leadership and Ministry Team

Remember the year when the Green Bay Packers won the Super Bowl with a large number of their starting players unable to play due to injury? As I watched them win, I thought, “Championship teams are flexible and enduring.”

Managing is the skill of placing people where their strengths can be effective for the organization.  As the MCA Church key results, “God is glorified and people are transformed into the image of Jesus Christ,” become further defined, it is prudent to posture our team for maximum impact.

With this in mind, it is a delight to share the following Pastoral Staff realignments.

First, we thank God for the ministry of Michael Roux in leading the MCA Church Worship and the Arts ministry for the past seven years.  Michael and Rachel add life, joy, and energy every where they go. Michael’s tenure as the Pastor of the MCA Worship and the Arts ministry is coming to a close as he moves to God’s next assignment for him.

Recently Michael stated, “It is time to make a change.  God is moving me on.”  If it weren’t for the confidence that God is all wise, we would argue against this decision. However, we are completely supportive of God’s will and plan.

The MCA Interim Youth Pastor, Jonathan Redfearn, will transfer on September 1, 2016, to the role of MCA Worship and the Arts Director.  I look forward to watching all that the Lord intends for our Worship and the Arts ministry, including additional dramatic arts and choral opportunities.

In every venue we have room for the release of your worship and the arts ministry.  Do you do graphic design? Write music?  Poetry? Are you an actress or actor? Your skill set is in high demand at MCA Church!

Kelli Reed, MCA Young Adult Director, is planning a year away from the hustle and hurry of young adult ministry. Not to worry!  She’ll be back highly energized, invigorated, full of new revelation.  We love Kelli and are fired up about God’s plans for her.

I’ll miss Kelli’s quick scientific mind dropping quotes on us in staff meetings, but fully expect her to drop into our meetings from time to time with the latest discovery in string theory (Umbral Moonshine?).  Hurry back to the action, Kelli.

Alejandro (Alex) Esteban has responded to the call of God to serve the students of South Central Alaska and the MCA Church network as the MCA Church Youth Director. EXCITING! Alex (from Guam) and Zyla (from Hawaii) add to the wonderful cultural diversity of our team.

Alex has resigned his supervisor position at NC Machinery to pursue God’s special calling to youth ministry. Prior to NC Machinery Alex worked (over six years) at Denali Family Services with students experiencing autism, ADD and ADHD, depression, severe emotional disturbance, emotional neglect, and physical or sexual abuse.  His co-workers there speak exceptionally highly of Alex’ effectiveness with the students.

Additionally, Alex, knowing the call of God, has prepared for this calling by participating in classes at Far North Bible College and the Alaska School of Ministry. His ministry to students at MCA Island Revival and Revival Assembly has been effective and life changing for the teens.

Sorry, Green Bay Packers, you aren’t the only flexible and enduring championship team.  :0)

Our Much Loved Lady R

Lady R is as loved as a person can be. Her attitude, spirit, and determination impact hundreds of people each week. Recently she decided to return to the home of her father, sister, and brothers (her mother is already living the life in Heaven).

Many people have helped Lady R during her recent bout with illness. She is exceedingly thankful and appreciative.

Special thanks to all who have prayed, given time, items, money, and tons of love. You are all essential in her life and healing.

Humbled by The Gift!

Surprised. Speechless. Overwhelmed. Beyond words. Appreciative. Thankful. Amazed.

Pastor Philippe YAMEOGO shocked me with one of the grandest gifts of my life.

Philippe gave me the Word of God.

His gift is inerrant, infalible, authoritative, and ageless. It explains the Alpha and the Omega, the Lion of the Tribe of Judah, and the Great I Am. His gift reveals Jesus, God’s Son, as the Savior of all mankind. In it’s pages we learn of Jesus’ power over sin, sickness, and Satan. Written there are the words of life and from it we learn about life eternal. Without this book we would not know of heaven, the New Jerusalem, the Throne Room, and the heavenly Tabernacle. Yes, Philippe gave me a Holy Bible. But not just any Holy Bible.

He gave me HIS Holy Bible.

This is the Bible with which he has learned the ways of God, come to know the love of God, and experienced revelation. From this Bible he has taught school classes, Sunday school, Bible studies, weekend sermons, revival meetings, staff meetings, missionary conventions, prayer meetings, children’s church, youth camps, and taught his children the words and ways of God.

As Philippe began to explain his appreciation to me, I had a growing sense of unworthiness. Not the kind that causes self contempt or feelings of worthlessness but the awareness that love and grace are far beyond my ability to comprehend.

If I was worthy, it wouldn’t have been a gift, but a payment. philippe bible

The only appropriate response to spectacular love is humble acceptance.

Philippe, my dear friend, thank you.

Over 2,000 years ago Someone Else gave us the Word of God and the words of God.

The only appropriate response is humble acceptance.

A Summer of Living Local

Max Wiltshire’s question still intrigues me. “Do you fly from Jerusalem, over Judea and over Samaria, to get to minister to the utter most parts of the world?”

Any way you slice it, we need to be more engaged with the work of the Lord in our Jerusalem. All four are important. One is not more important than the other. But it all starts in Jerusalem. It all starts in the place you call home.

This summer our priority is to live local. Be as engaged as possible in your neighborhood. Buy your gas at your neighborhood station. Don’t drive across town for something that is available just down the street. Host block parties. Practice acts of kindness to those closest to your home. Live local.

To the Nations!

Dave, Becky, and Ephraim are leaving MCA Church, and I couldn’t be happier!!! Well, I am not happy they are leaving but I am overjoyed that they are following the call of God upon their lives for ministry in the Philippine Islands. MCA Church is infused with great people from the Philippines. I can not imagine leading our assembly without our dear Filipino and Filipina members.

The Taylors are a huge part of the MCA Church. Their ministry among us has been tenured and varied. Currently Dave and Becky are ministering as the Service Leads of MCA Church’s Greatest Hits. They are EXTREMELY helpful.

For many years David and Becky have been preparing to participate in Church planting in the Philippines. They own a home, are connected with a local assembly, and have already begun the church planting processes.

Sunday evening, April 22, Dave and Becky will talk with our congregation and then we will call the Elders of the church and those assembled to officially send the Taylors from Anchorage to the Philippines. We already have Missionary Associate, Sean Gordon, in the Philippines and look forward to sending more folks, as God leads.

Provision for the Vision!

One of my heroes, Hudson Taylor, was fond of saying, “Where God guides, God provides.” I too have found the provision of God to be ample for the work He has designed for me to do. Following is a poem (whose author is unknown) that captures the guiding and providing aspects of our Father.

I’d rather walk in the dark with God
Than go alone in the light;
I’d rather walk by faith with Him
Than go alone by sight. –Anon.

Be encouraged today. God is providing! My friend, Caleb McAfee, has given light to the subject of God’s provision by saying, “Biblical prosperity is having more than enough to accomplish God’s plan.” God will come through for you and for His vision for you. You will have more than enough to get God’s plan for your life accomplished.

We are thankful for those who are investing in the vision of the MCA worship community at year’s end. There are so many opportunities simply waiting for us to grab onto them for God’s glory. Provision is part of what is needed for this to happen.

As you reflect over your resources for 2011, will you consider a hefty year-end investment into the ministry of Muldoon Community Assembly? Every gift is greatly needed for the purpose of advancing the vision. God guides and provides both to us and through us. May my giving be part of the answer to the prayers for provision for all of our missionaries, ministries, and opportunities. You may give online here.

If you chose to send a check, please mail to Muldoon Community Assembly, 7041 DeBarr Road, Anchorage, Alaska, 99504.

Stay blessed and continue to be a blessing.

Skin Is In!

The need followers of Jesus have for each other has been in the front of my thinking for several months. Reflecting on the Biblical writer’s selection of a body metaphor for God’s church has been good for my understanding of the Christian family. Every system in the body is totally dependent upon the other systems to function at full capacity. Even a simple cell can not survive if the respiratory system fails.

What holds all of the systems of the body into one being? Why aren’t your lungs over there and your kidneys here? Your skin, in part, separates you from all other matter and in some ways your skin holds you together too. Skin also, according to Wikipedia, “guards the underlying muscles, bones, ligaments, and internal organs.” I have heard it said many times, usually about dear patients who have experienced a serious burn, “They can not survive without skin.”

So, yes, skin is in.

Maybe the local church is the skin of the body of Christ?

The author of Hebrews wrote, “Don’t forsake your skin!” Okay, Hebrews 10:25 actually says “Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together…”

The Hebrews passage even informs us that the further we get into the future the more we need our skin. Something out there in the environment of the future requires us to be more connected than ever. As “the day” approaches, the health of the body will be determined, in part, by the skin.

This holiday season is different from every other season you have experienced because it is the furthest you have ever been into the future. You are closer to “the day” than you have ever been.

I need you. You need your sister. Your neighbor needs you. We need each other.

Skin is in!
