David Naugle, chair and professor of philosophy at Dallas Baptist University said, “For Augustine, our lives are determined by our loves, whether they be disordered or rightly ordered, whether our loves and lives be cupidity or charity.”
According to Augustine there are some loves that are of higher virtue and priority than other loves. For him, the goal of the Christian life is to order our loves with the priority and primacy of Jesus’ loves.
During Lent I am invited to observe what I truly love, the priority I give these loves, and the privilege of shaping or reshaping them. What is the order of your loves and affections? Are you willing to take a look at your heart and reshape it to the Jesus order of love?
