And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 27 “Now on the tenth day of this seventh month is the Day of Atonement. It shall be for you a time of holy convocation, and you shall afflict yourselves[d] and present a food offering to the Lord. 28 And you shall not do any work on that very day, for it is a Day of Atonement, to make atonement for you before the Lord your God. 29 For whoever is not afflicted[e] on that very day shall be cut off from his people. 30 And whoever does any work on that very day, that person I will destroy from among his people. 31 You shall not do any work. It is a statute forever throughout your generations in all your dwelling places. 32 It shall be to you a Sabbath of solemn rest, and you shall afflict yourselves. On the ninth day of the month beginning at evening, from evening to evening shall you keep your Sabbath.” Numbers 23:26-32
- It is a time of holy Vs. 27
- It is a time of fasting and repentance. 27
- It is a day with no work. 28
- It is a Sabbath of solemn rest with fasting and repentance. Vs. 32
And he shall take from the congregation of the people of Israel two male goats for a sin offering, and one ram for a burnt offering. Numbers 16:5
Then he shall take the two goats and set them before the Lord at the entrance of the tent of meeting. Numbers 16:7
And Aaron shall present the goat on which the lot fell for the Lord and use it as a sin offering. Numbers 16:9
And Aaron shall lay both his hands on the head of the live goat, and confess over it all the iniquities of the people of Israel, and all their transgressions, all their sins. And he shall put them on the head of the goat and send it away into the wilderness by the hand of a man who is in readiness. 22 The goat shall bear all their iniquities on itself to a remote area, and he shall let the goat go free in the wilderness. Numbers 16:21-23
- The sacrifice of the first goat pictures Jesus on the cross.
- The blood of the goat, sprinkled in the Holy of Holies, pictures Jesus’ blood in the heavenly Holy of Holies.
- But when Christ appeared as a high priest of the good things that have come,[e]then through the greater and more perfect tent (not made with hands, that is, not of this creation) 12 he entered once for all into the holy places, not by means of the blood of goats and calves but by means of his own blood, thus securing an eternal redemption. Hebrews 9:11-12
Goat Two Pictures Jesus
- The casting of sin upon the second goat pictures Jesus becoming sin for us.
- For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. 2 Corinthians 5:21
- The removal of the second goat pictures Jesus removing our sins from us.
- The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! John 1:29
In Jesus, our sins are both covered and removed.
Highlight Numbers 16:7, because it is the KEY to the entire sacrifice and offering system.
Then he shall take the two goats and set them before the Lord at the entrance of the tent of meeting. Numbers 16:7
The sacrifice and offering system and the Ministry of Jesus are for relationship with the LORD!
Listen – My Story
- Our theme for Global Outreach Month is “Go.” Where would you go on a dream vacation?
- Where is your favorite place you have been?
Lift – Prayer
- Please pray for each person in your group who is practicing repentance today.
- Please pray for those interested in traveling to Texas for flood relief work.
- Please pray for the Children’s Ministry Center in Iraq.
- Please pray for Pastor Philippe’s safe travel to Anchorage this week.
Learn – Digging Deeper
- Pastor Philippe challenged us to obey Matthew 28:19 by “going into all the world and making disciples.” Jesus’ command is very clear, easy to understand, and easy to do. Why do we live as if Jesus said, “Stay where you are?” What excuses do we use to disobey His command to go?
- The message we present as we “Go,” is God, in Jesus, has atoned for your sins and provided for relationship with you and God. Atonement features the covering of sin and the removal of sin.
- Read Psalm 32:1. Do you see the covering of sin in this passage?
- Read Psalm 103:12. Do you see sin being removed?
- Read 1 Corinthians 1:18. Why might the message of the atonement provided on the cross be considered foolishness to our world today?
- Read 1 Corinthians 1:23. Are you willing, as you “Go,” to preach Christ crucified? If so, what response might you receive from those who hear?
Life – Taking it Home
